After six months of cricket comprising 860 cricket matches, the 2013 New Jersey Soft Ball Cricket League (NJSBCL) season will culminate with an exciting grand United Healthcare NJSBCL Championship Final on Sunday, October 6th at the John A. Phillips Park, 300 Maple Street, Old Bridge, NJ 08857. The action gets underway at 8:00am.
Two of the most consistent teams of the league – NJ Stars and VIHO Desi Warriors - will vie for the top spot in Division I of NJSBCL. While NJ Stars have reached the final for the second time in three years, this will be VIHO Desi Warriors’ maiden appearance in the final. This summit clash promises to be a real humdinger.
The Division II Championship clash between two past Champions of NJSBCL – AdroIT CC and Tiranga CC - will be held in the morning. Both of these teams have had memorable battles in Division 1 before. However, this will be their first major clash for the Division II Championship and whoever can keep their game intact in this pressure game, will run away with the trophy.
Minimum entry-level barriers along with the friendly nature of the league, was instrumental in its rapid growth over the last 10 years. Since its birth in 2000 with just six clubs, NJSBCL has grown into the home of soft ball cricket in New Jersey. Owing to its large membership, which includes close to 100 clubs and 2,500 individual members, the league has been able to attract an impressive list of sponsors over the years. Sponsors for the 2013 season include United Healthcare, PNC Bank, NJ Group Services, Persis Indian Grill, and Logic Planet, Inc.
The league's 94 clubs play in two divisions. During 2013, top 32 teams based on 2012 performance participated in Division I. While the remaining 62 teams played in Division II. All the games are 16-Overs each. The league uses foam filled heavy tennis balls that are made especially for this type of cricket. The league's season kicks off in March and ends in October every year. NJSBCL is a registered not-for-profit organization and a member of the American Cricket Federation (ACF), which hopes to unite soft ball cricket and hard ball cricket under one umbrella.
The league provides its members with a platform away from the home and office environments to be rejuvenated through physical exercise, without the time commitment needed for leather ball games. Soft ball matches typically start at 8:30 AM and are usually over by 11:00 AM.
The tremendous growth of soft ball cricket has also aided the growth of leather ball or hard ball cricket leagues and helped generate greater awareness about cricket among government bodies. This has paved the way for greater allocation of funds for development of cricket grounds in Middlesex and Mercer Counties, and in the townships of South Brunswick, Edison, Piscataway, and East Brunswick
