A schedule for 2013 ICC World Cricket League Division Three in Bermuda was published by USACA today with the revelation that USA will play their two toughest opponents on the opening two days of the tournament. USA starts the event on Sunday April 28 against Nepal at Somerset Cricket Club before taking on Italy on April 29 at the National Sports Stadium in the capital city of Hamilton.
USA is 1-3 all-time against Italy with their only win coming in the final of 2010 ICC WCL Division Four in Italy. USA has not been able to beat Italy in a round-robin phase in any ICC tournament, losing by 51 runs in the group stage of Division Four in Italy and by four wickets at 2011 ICC WCL Division Three in Hong Kong. Allrounder Peter Petricola has been USA’s chief tormentor in the Italy side, winning the Man of the Match award in both games. Italy also beat USA by 8 runs at the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE.
Nepal has USA’s number in World Cricket League tournaments as well, holding a 4-2 record over USA with two abandonments in the eight matches between the two sides. Nepal swept the pair of matches played against USA at ICC WCL Division Four last September in Malaysia, winning by 32 runs in the round-robin phase before crushing USA by eight wickets in the tournament final. Left-arm spinner Basant Regmi took 5 for 35 in the first match and followed it up with 5 for 20 in the title game to give Nepal an undefeated tournament title. Nepal just clinched a spot in the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier by finishing second in Group A behind Hong Kong at the 2013 Asian Cricket Council Twenty20 Cup currently taking place on home soil in Kathmandu.
USA returns to Somerset CC on May 1 to play Oman before taking on Uganda at St. David’s CC on May 2. USA is 1-1 in 50-over matches against Oman and defeated Oman at the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. Oman finished in fourth place at 1-3 in Group B during the 2013 Asian Cricket Council Twenty20 Cup, losing to Afghanistan and UAE in addition to a shock defeat to Kuwait. Uganda defeated USA in their only encounter in 50-over cricket by six wickets at the 2005 ICC Trophy and also stunned USA by four wickets in the opening game in Sharjah at the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. Uganda recently finished runner-up to Kenya at the 2013 ICC Africa Division One Twenty20 Qualifier after going 7-1 in the double round-robin event.
USA finishes round-robin play on May 4 against Bermuda at the National Sports Stadium. USA beat Bermuda in a pair of Twenty20 matches at the 2013 ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament as well as two out of three 50-over matches last month in Florida. USA has not lost to Bermuda in ICC tournament play since a 113-run defeat at the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland.
