South Africa pulling out of the Unitech tri-nation tournament in Sri Lanka after Monday's bomb blast in Colombo has reduced it to a bi-nation tournament involving India and Sri Lanka.
The two teams will now play three matches, starting on Friday. Sri Lanka wanted to play five games, but the Indians stuck to three.
This is not the first time violence has disrupted a cricket tour and it is surely not the last.
The most infamous of these was a massive bomb blast in Colombo just before the Reliance World Cup in 1996. Australia and the West Indies refused to travel to Sri Lanka and the tournament was almost called off as a result.
In 2002 New Zealand returned home after an attack in Karachi and they were also present in Sri Lanka on two earlier occasions when terror struck in Colombo. Australian cricketers expressed their unease too after the train bombings in Mumbai last month. Mumbai will be hosting the final of the Champions Trophy in October.
Last year Australia continued with the Ashes series after the 7/7 terror attacks in London.
So are South Africa justified in flying back home? Or are their fears exaggerated?
