Oman and Canada got one step closer to fulfilling their dreams of featuring in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 when they claimed the top positions in the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 to be promoted to the Division 2 event.
Oman defeated Canada in a rain-affected reduced over game in final of the ICC World Cricket League Division 3. Canada, batting first scored, 176 runs for three in its 38 allotted overs. Bhavindu Adhihetty batted excellently to score 86 from 108 balls, including ten fours, and featured in a 102-run first wicket partnership with Nitish Kumar (50). Navneet Dhaliwal (13) and Dhanuka Pathirana (21 not out) performed well to get Canada to a competitive total. In reply, Oman’s Zeeshan Maqsood scored a quick-fire 32, including four fours and two sixes, but the rain set in and play was abandoned after 4.3 overs.
The battle for third place between USA and Singapore was abandoned on Tuesday after 25.2 overs were bowled before the rain set in. Sagar Patel (36 not out) and Alex Amsterdam (24 not out) both looked in good form helping USA reach 95 for two, when the match was abandoned. USA finished the tournament in fourth place edging out hosts Uganda in their final round-robin match on Monday. USA defeated Uganda by 13 runs to finish fourth in a nail-biter. The main feature of the USA-Uganda match was a spirit bowling performance by captain Steve Taylor, who returned figures of five for 32, as the host side, chasing 146 runs for victory, was bowled out for 132 after being 82 for three in the 19th over. In retrospect, with the NRR situation as it was, Elmore Hutchinson (52 from 50 balls) played a crucial man-of-the-match winning role in ensuring that USA was not relegated to Division 4 (pictured above).
USA, along with Singapore, now stay in Division 3, whereas Uganda and Malaysia by virtue of finishing in the bottom two have been relegated to Division 4.
In their final round-robin match on May 29, Oman routed Malaysia by 131 runs to finish with four wins in five matches, while Canada suffered a shock but thrilling two-run defeat against Singapore. However, Canada, which has played in four World Cups, edged out the Asian side on superior net run-rate after both the sides had finished on six points apiece. That set up the final between Oman and Canada.
Oman and Canada will be joined by the top four sides from the ICC World Cricket League Championship and the bottom four sides from the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018. The top two sides from the qualifier will progress to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which will be staged in the United Kingdom from 30 May to 15 July.
