USA to host an International T20 series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in May 2010

In the first major announcement since formalizing its strategic partnership with New Zealand Cricket, the United States Cricket Association Chief Executive Donald Lockerbie - after completing meetings in Dubai - advised today that Sri Lanka has confirmed and will play the Black Caps in three Twenty20 internationals in late May 2010.

This match series represents the first ever cricket match played in the United States by two Full Member ICC countries. The series will be played at the ICC approved Central Broward Regional Park Cricket Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.

The partnership between USA Cricket and NZ Cricket is being structured in such a way as to encourage commercial enterprise, develop major cricket events, provide cricket services from NZ Cricket operations to USA national, regional and club programs, and to secure external investment opportunities to build and fund the growth of cricket in the USA.

Justin Vaughan, Chief Executive of New Zealand Cricket said, “Given the ‘door to cricket’ has been opened to investment through the sale of Indian Premier League franchises, this model is a logical step to raising the capital required to take cricket in the US to another level.” He continued, “The structure proposed is a wonderful opportunity for someone to get in on the ground floor, particularly given the growing level of interest in the US cricket market.”

Mr. Lockerbie said, “We are experiencing increasing demand for “Destination USA” cricket events from many Full Member ICC countries and the Sri Lanka vs. New Zealand series will bring - as forecasted - world class cricket to the USA.

“The USA National Team will also participate in warm-up matches for the full members.  Through the strategic collaboration with New Zealand Cricket we now have the additional administrative support and knowledge base to be able to commercialize these opportunities and ultimately grow the revenue streams from one of the world’s largest advertising markets.”

“The planned creation of a commercial vehicle with New Zealand Cricket is designed to serve a number of purposes. Firstly, it provides a clear focus on generating revenue, as the commercial rights will be separated from cricket operations.  Secondly, the entity will be responsible for creating and/or sourcing cricket content.  Finally, and most importantly, it provides an avenue for investment in USA Cricket that will be hugely attractive to both US and international investors who appreciate the potential of this market and have a love for the game.”

The announcement is timely given that IPL Commissioner, Lalit Modi and his COO, Sundar Raman have held talks with USA Cricket with a view to the US hosting IPL related events as early as 2011. USA Cricket is also interested in hosting ICC events in the future and is developing a bid committee to launch this initiative as well; notwithstanding the work that has been done dating back to mid-2009 to start a domestic T20 league of its own by 2012.

Mr. Lockerbie further stated, “These events and initiatives are a small indication of the amount of cricket content under consideration with our partners at New Zealand Cricket. We will be meeting with potential investors and event developers over the next few weeks and months to keep building our momentum. The interest is already high from potential investors in India and the US, and this is very encouraging.”

Well said Tom. 90% of the cricket fans in this country do not know that cricket is even played here. Atleast this will get them involved and hopefully their kids and larger player base for junior cricket, and so on. May happen may not happen, but it is better than negative thinking and doing nothing.

Tom, for all we know, you may not even know what the color of a cricket ball is. USA is in a such a time zone that cricket on TV is not a revenue genarator, unless you get the super powers Australia or India. So this thing ain't gonna work. Now Florida, how many would actually pay to watch this may be a 3000 max. That too i ma very generous with that number.

Personally would I pay PPV on tv  "NO". NZ is not that exciting in T20 as a team. Sri Lanka yes.

Now talking about Lockerbie, he got hired in April 2009. Now it is almost April 2010 around the corner. What has he done in 11 months - nothing.

Give me a years salary and i will show you all, how USA cricket can improve.

We need to improve standards of Cricket in USA and get rid of current Administration, then only we will progress. All these guys here just want to make a quick buck. NZ/SL will not be a success no matter what.

Will not have a big turn out, unless Lockerbie gives out free roundtrip air tkts and free match tickets for all those who want to see.

Lockerbie, do you know anything about NHL - Ice Hockey league.

Even the great Gretzky can't get this league promoted in USA. You think Cricket will take off.

Keep dreaming. I hate to tell you, Don't waste your time, USA money on this this will be a failure. Spend that money on local USA Cricket tournaments, have national tournaments, have coaching camps. Invite former test players to conduct camps for our promising youth not old farts on the USA team.

Have a new USACA election  and you will see how many new faces show up to overthrow the current administration. Unless this is done you AIN'T goinna do NOTHING.

PROMOTE USA CRICKET.

Tom, please don't take my comment above (comment 3) as being negative. I would love for this proposed series to be a success.

I was just thinking from the perspective of New Zealand and Sri Lanka that it would make more sense for them to treat the games as a warm up for the T20 world cup instead of playing after the main tournament.

Timmyj51, very valid questions.

IF. a big IF, if it happens

1. YES it will make money , not for USACA - but for the Executives, because, th emoney that USACA makes will not trickle down to the leagues in any shape or form.

2. Raise the competitive standard of national team, NO it will not, which national team we are talking about. There aint none as this current team will be dismantled to shreds.

3. IT WILL NOT RAISE THE PROFILE OF MAINSTREAM AMERCANS. What profile ?

4. Lauderhill will not accomplish this.

NO DESIS, or WEST INDIANS  WILL GO TO WATCH THIS. ONLY SRI LANKA EXPATS IF ANY and FLORIDA DOESN'T HAVE ANY.

One can watch live streaming for free, why watch this ...............

Timmyj51, you are absolutely right, It's all about dollars and NON sense. Look at Project USA, DUD. Just ask Gary Hopkins why it failed.

Read between the lines................ IPL will not shift to USA just a few exhibition games, if any.

Oh Youth Cricketer says, West Indians will go watch the T20/20 between NZ & SL after major work hours. So T20/20 will wait for you to get off work and then start the game so just you can watch it live. Give me a break, what are you smoking.....

It is only right that New Zealand and Sri Lanka should consider their best interests in any decision they make. Hopefully USACA is also considering its best interests (and more importantly, its stakeholders' best interests) in signing this deal.

If the series is a success, all three parties should come out ahead. I can understand Lockerbie's determination to increase revenues. The amount of money that USACA has to work with is very limited. The ICC can not and will not pick up all the bills, and needs individual countries to help themselves.

I would assume that revenues will mainly be coming from ticket sales and television rights. But if the series is run properly with more regular series in the future, the aim would be for building the awareness of cricket in the local area, leading to increased sponsorship.

The other side of this is actually on the cricket field instead of in the accounts. This is another opportunity for the US to field a team. The more often a team gets together and plays on a proper pitch, the more chance they will have in future series. Of course I would not expect the US team to come close to either New Zealand or Sri Lanka, but they will at least get some more experience. That is, if they pick the right team...

Long weekend, and Lockerbie is still at it. It is not going to happen. Team USA is in Nepal and partying (practicing) hard. Fileding practice. Massiah what you need is batting practice and need help in setting the batting order.

Massiah at # 3, Thaygarajan to bat at #4 and Saurabh Verma to bat at #6. Wright and Nadkarni to open. For god's sake dump Dhaniram, he is done. His reflexes are as good as a new born baby.

Then again you will not listen as this is your last round so do as you please. You will not play for USA again.

Best yet, sit out fake an injury and let someone else lead the team, so the monkey is off your back.
