Cush has experienced a resurgence in the last few years through his performances in the Twenty20 format of the game. Both Guyana and USA have been beneficiaries of Cush’s all-round skills.

For the USA national team, Cush was the leading scorer in 2010 with 155 runs in nine matches at an average of 17.22. His best performance with the bat came in the semi-finals of the ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 championship against host team Bermuda. Cush scored 65 opening USA’s chase after they were set 138 to win. The next best score for USA was 25 not out by Rashard Marshall as America prevailed by 2 wickets.

Hours later in the final against Canada, Cush turned in his best bowling performance of the year. Opening the bowling with Timroy Allen, the pair decimated Canada’s top order to put USA on the path to victory. Cush finished with 2 for 10 in four overs as USA bowled Canada out for 100 before winning by 5 wickets to claim the inaugural Twenty20 title for the Americas Region.

For the year, Cush was the second highest wicket taker for USA with 9 at 25.11, proving his effectiveness as an opening bowler with his off-spin. He finished behind only Allen who had 12, while both men tied for the team’s best economy rate for bowlers who bowled at least one over per team game (minimum of nine overs for 2010). Each player only managed to concede 6.65 runs per over.

In recognition of his achievement, Cush will receive a plaque as well as a $250 gift certificate sponsored by the New Inning Foundation, DreamCricket.com and Radiant Info.

  • 2010 Radiant Info USA Cricket Awards: Comeback Player of the Year - Sushil Nadkarni

DreamCricket.com is wrapping up the year in United States Cricket by recognizing USA’s standout performers at the international level. The 2010 Radiant Info Comeback Player of the Year is Sushil Nadkarni.

Pic (Right):  Sushil Nadkarni top-scored against Tanzania with 68 not out including three boundaries and eight sixes. [File photo]

On August 1, 2009, Nadkarni suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon playing for the Central West Region at the Western Conference Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. It typically takes at least six to nine months to completely rehabilitate such an injury. With USA scheduled to participate in two major tournaments early in 2010, he was in a race against time to be healthy enough to participate.

Nadkarni was rushed back into USA’s squad for the February tour to the UAE and Nepal, but it was clear he was not 100% fit. He struggled throughout the tour, but repaid the team’s faith in him with a heroic 57 not out in a must-win game to lead USA to a 5-wicket win over Nepal at ICC WCL Division Five, guaranteeing the team qualification to Division Four.

Once he returned to full fitness, Nadkarni was a menace to the opposition. At the ICC Americas Division One tournament in Bermuda during May and June, he scored USA’s quickest century of the year, notching 101 not out in 54 balls in a 10-wicket win over Cayman Islands.

In August, Nadkarni collected three Man of the Match awards at ICC WCL Division Four before taking away the award for Player of the Tournament as USA defeated host team Italy in the final to win the event. Nadkarni was the leading scorer for USA in Italy with 216 runs and finished third overall in the tournament.

In 2010, he averaged 59.11 in 14 innings for USA in 50-over matches, the highest average for USA during the year. He also finished third overall in total runs in 50-over matches for USA with 532 in 2010. The figures would be remarkable for any player, but especially one coming off a career-threatening injury. However, Nadkarni is arguably now fitter than ever and his performances in 2010 have made his comeback truly special.

In recognition of his achievement, Nadkarni will receive a plaque as well as a $250 gift certificate sponsored by the New Inning Foundation, DreamCricket.com and Radiant Info.

  • 2010 Radiant Info USA Cricket Awards: Individual Performance of the Year - Lennox Cush

DreamCricket.com is wrapping up the year in United States Cricket by recognizing USA’s standout performers at the international level. The 2010 Radiant Info Individual Performance of the Year belongs to Lennox Cush for his 55-ball century against Italy in the final of ICC World Cricket League Division Four played in Bologna, Italy.

Pic (Right):  Lennox Cush will receive a plaque and $250 gift certificate courtesy of New Inning Foundation, DreamCricket.com and Radiant Info for his merciless 55-ball century against Italy.   [File photo]

There were many brilliant solo efforts produced by USA players in 2010. Sushil Nadkarni scored a record 54-ball century against Cayman Islands in Bermuda. Aditya Thyagarajan posted the year’s highest score with 159 against Argentina in Bermuda. Thyagarajan and Rashard Marshall also scored vitally important centuries when USA was in trouble against Argentina in Italy. However, Cush’s performance tops them all because it came in a tournament final against a team that had previously beaten USA in the same event.

In USA’s first match against Italy at WCL Division Four, they were knocked back by the hosts, who posted a total of 212 batting first on their way to a convincing 51-run victory over the visitors. USA was aiming for revenge in a rematch at the final three days later. Batting first again, Italy was restricted to 185 in the final, but it still seemed that the match was evenly balanced especially after the way their bowlers performed in the round-robin contest.

Enter Cush, who was promoted up the order from his usual spot at number four to open USA’s chase in aggressive fashion, which is an understatement to say the least. Cush showed no respect and no mercy to Italy’s bowlers, tearing into them for 14 fours and four sixes, before he eventually departed for 101.

USA had been bowled out for 161 in 41.2 overs in their first matchup versus Italy. In round two, USA won by 8 wickets as they finished 188 for 2 in 21.4 overs, a stark contrast to how things ended up three days prior. USA’s dramatic turnaround was due in large part to Cush. He was an easy choice for Man of the Match in the Division Four final.

In recognition of his achievement, Cush will receive a plaque as well as a $250 gift certificate sponsored by the New Inning Foundation, DreamCricket.com and Radiant Info.

  • Chargers win $25K prize purse at Florida T20 tournament

The United Chargers won the $25,000 prize on offer at the T20 tournament conducted over the weekend by Cricket Council USA.   The team was led by Steve Massiah and comprised several Team USA players including Aditya Thyagarajan, Sushil Nadkarni and Timroy Allen.

After defeating Virginia Warriors in their opening game, the Chargers dispelled NY Dodgers and earned a bye against Sixer Daredevils who were a no-show.

The Chargers were pitted against Bedessee Florida Destroyers in the first semi-final match.   The Destroyers, who were forced to reconstitute their two teams on arrival in Florida due to the absence of the previously announced international stars, indulged in some unimaginable self-destruction.  On a damp wicket, after the openers Ken Wright and Akeem Dodson put on 46 for the first wicket, the remaining batsmen collapsed like 9 pins adding just 56 runs.  In fact, the final six wickets fell for a disastrous 4 runs.

A disciplined Pakistan Magic disposed off Miami Thunder in the other semi-final.  Openers, Ken Singh (29) and Hussain Haider (33) were magical in their opening partnership facing the tireless Chargers' spin attack.  But when Singh fell with the score reading 48, Pakistan Magic had no more tricks up their sleeve and folded their act for 113.  Chargers cleaned the total up with 4 overs to spare with Carl Wright on 47* and Steve Massiah 23*.

Steven Taylor of Miami Thunder won the Tournament MVP and finished with most runs in the tournament.  Masood Mohammed got most wickets and Carl Wright was the MVP for the finals.

DreamCricket.com is wrapping up the year in United States Cricket by recognizing USA’s standout performers at the international level. The 2010 Radiant Info Newcomer of the Year is 20-year-old off-spin bowler Muhammad Ghous.

Pic (Right): Muhammad Ghous will receive a plaque and a $250 gift certificate courtesy of New Inning Foundation and Radiant Info

Ghous had been building a strong profile in 2009 for his performances while helping the USA U-19 team qualify for the 2010 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

While he won the Tournament MVP award at the 2009 U-19 National Tournament after leading the tournament in runs scored for the Atlantic Region, it was his bowling that really came on strong in Canada and New Zealand.

After coming back from New Zealand, Ghous participated at selection trials in New York in April in an effort to make the squad that would be going to Bermuda in May for the ICC Americas Division One tournament. Ghous did enough to impress and wound up making his debut for USA before the tour of Bermuda against Jamaica when he took 2 for 42 in Florida and he never looked back.

His best figures came against Tanzania at ICC World Cricket League Division Four in Italy where he took 4 for 15 in a 10-wicket win. He was instrumental throughout that tournament in helping USA win the Division Four title.

Ghous finished the year as USA’s third highest wicket taker with 21 in 15 matches. He took five wickets in as many Twenty20 matches while he took 16 wickets in 10 50-over games. He was also USA’s most economical bowler of the year in 50-over matches, giving up 2.87 runs per over in 90 overs bowled.

The future is bright for Ghous and he is one player USA will be expecting to build around for the next several years. As a newcomer to USA’s senior squad, he stepped up to the challenge and always managed to come through for his team and country.

In recognition of his achievement, Ghous will receive a plaque as well as a $250 gift certificate sponsored by the New Inning Foundation, DreamCricket.com and Radiant Info.

  • Syed Shahanawaz elected president of North Texas Cricket Association

Syed Shahanawaz was elected as the President of the North Texas Cricket Association in general elections held on December 4, 2010 in Irving, TX. The election handed control of the league to a completely new team.

Pic (Right): Syed Shahanawaz was elected president of NTCA on December 4th

Regional and one-time USA player Rahul Kukreti was elected as Vice President.   Aziz Savul, Ramesh Thyagarajan and Amer Sheikh were elected for the positions of General Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

Shahanawaz is widely admired for his administrative abilities in the Central West region, which he served as the Director between 2001 and 2008.  When he took over in 2001, Central West was ranked seventh out of the eight regions and did not participate in national tournaments.  During his time as Director, the region won five Western Conference championships in the space of six years and also was runner-up at the national level thrice.   “My focus was to first lay a solid foundation in our region. It definitely did us proud and we were able to transform it into one of the most active regions in the country."  In 2009, Shahanawaz earned ICC recognition for his contributions to the game.

He now hopes to replicate that success within his league.   In an email to DreamCricket.com, Mr. Shahanawaz wrote: "We are all excited and looking forward to build on NTCA's gains from the previous administrations.   Our effort is to make NTCA one of the best leagues in the country."

  • ICC proposal gives hope to USA in T20 and Multi-day cricket formats

In a media release issued today, ICC announced that the ICC Intercontinental Cup (I Cup) will henceforth be a biennial eight-team, first-class tournament giving USA a chance to qualify for the next edition of the cup.  Scheduled to run from May 2011 until December 2012, the I Cup features six nations with ODI status - Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands and Scotland.

In addition, two places will be determined by the ICC Development Committee from the top four teams of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 2 (WCL Div. 2), leaving the doors slightly ajar for USA to qualify.

For USA to actually make the short-list, it must achieve a top-two finish in WCL Division 3, to be played in Hong Kong between January 22-29, 2011.   Top two finishers will join Bermuda, Namibia, UAE and Uganda in the WCL Div 2 event, which is scheduled for April 2011 in Dubai.  The I Cup will begin in May 2011 on a round-robin basis with the top two teams progressing towards the final.

Once it joins this rarefied group, the biggest hurdle for USA will be to find players who can devote more of their time to cricket than their current jobs permit, which boils down to providing a contract to the players.

ICC Global Development Manager Matthew Kennedy said: "In making this decision, consideration was given to the international cricket opportunities now provided to all 95 Associate and Affiliate Members across all three formats of the game.

"With balancing these formats in mind, it is important to offer the best non-Test-playing nations the opportunity to compete in meaningful multi-day cricket. And as a result of this expanded I Cup, the second division that was the ICC Intercontinental Shield is no longer required," he added.

It has also been decided that the first 16-team ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, which will determine the six teams to join the ten Full Members at the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September 2012, will be staged in the UAE in the early part of 2012.

The Development Committee has confirmed that the regional Twenty20 qualification systems through 2011 will provide the 10 teams that will join the six ODI nations in the WT20 Qualifier. The teams would be drawn from Asia (3), Europe (2), Africa (2), Americas (2) and East Asia Pacific (1), making USA's participation in the Qualifier a near certainty.

The year in cricket is ending, but DreamCricket.com is beginning something new by establishing its first ever Radiant Info USA Cricket Awards.  With so many tremendous players and outstanding performances, it is only fitting that the players and people who have done their best to make USA shine bright on the international stage be recognized for their efforts.

"An essential component of cricket development is to celebrate the achievements of the cricketers and cricket supporters.  At DreamCricket.com, we have wanted to launch these awards for some years now and I would like to thank Radiant Info and the New Inning Foundation for helping us realize this dream" Kranthi Bayya, CEO of DreamCricket.com said.

In 2010, there were 49 players who represented USA in tournaments around the globe at the U-19, women’s and senior cricket levels. All of them deserve to be commended for making it into the final playing XI for any USA team. However, in the player category, the Radiant Info USA Cricket awards will only honor the best of the best from among USA’s national teams.

Each weekday for the next two weeks, DreamCricket.com will unveil the winner of each of the nine player awards on offer in 2010.  That will be followed around Christmas by awards recognizing off-field efforts and initiatives.

The awards have been decided based on a combination of factors including statistical achievement, performing under pressure, and giving their best effort to represent USA in 2010. The players were judged on their performances in USA’s international commitments. These included the ICC U-19 World Cup, ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, ICC WCL Division Five, The Pearls Cup vs. Jamaica, ICC Americas Division One, ICC Americas Women’s Championship and ICC WCL Division Four.

It is inevitable that the awards will be debated, particularly in relation to the statistical aspects of the awards presented to players who represented USA at the senior level. • NEO Cricket is now available via Comcast in NJ, Philadelphia and California markets

Now, you can get all the USA Cricket updates via Facebook.   Also follow us on Twitter via @dreamcricket

Some 60 years after the deployment of cable TV in America, Comcast finally brought cricket to viewers in parts of California, Philadelphia and New Jersey markets. "Comcast is the first cable provider to bring a 24-7 cricket offering to U.S. cricket fans," said David Jensen, Vice President of Content Acquisition at Comcast.

The coverage is so new that even Comcast customer service reps are unsure of its arrival.  Should you decide to order, you may need to spell the name of the channel and then emphatically state that you know that it is available before they will offer to look it up, take your money and upgrade you.

It is currently only available at an a la carte rate of $14.99 per month.  Of course, rights for a fair amount of cricket, like the hugely popular Ashes series and ICC matches, are not held by NEO Cricket.   But if you are into Indian cricket, you are in for a bonanza.  NEO Cricket's coverage includes international cricket matches played in India, such as the ongoing India vs New Zealand ODI series.

NEO's coverage includes all domestic cricket in India including the Challenger Series; Irani Trophy; Ranji Trophy Premier Cup for Vijay Hazare Trophy and All Star Series for the Deodhar Trophy. NEO also broadcasts original productions like Baat and Bowl, Cricket Tadka Marke, Ballebaaz, Jaya He and Encounter.

NEO Cricket can be found on Channel 339 in most of Comcast's California systems, including: Alameda, Chico, Davis, Fremont, Fresno, Grass Valley, Half Moon Bay, Lodi, Los Banos, Marysville, Modesto, Monterey, Merced, Oakland, Oroville, Placerville, Roseville, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Stockton, Tracy, Tulare, Vacaville, Visalia and Yuba City.

In New Jersey, it is available on Channel 689 in large swaths of the state including Princeton, Hillsborough, Trenton, Union, Cherry Hill, Jersey City, Plainfield, Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex.

In Pennsylvania, it is available in and around Philadelphia, the Mecca of cricket.

  • USA Cricket: 2010 Junior Nationals set for December 28-30 in Los Angeles

    By Peter Della Penna

The USACA 2010 Junior Nationals, originally scheduled for November 12-14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before being postponed will now take place from December 28-30 at Woodley Park in Los Angeles. The dates were confirmed by USACA Vice President of Operations Manaf Mohamed.

Teams representing the New York, North West, South East and South West Regions will compete to be the National Champions at the U-19 level for 2010. North West has already won the Senior Nationals and the U-15 National Championship this year. They are also the reigning U-19 National Champions from 2009.

Speaking about the decision to host the tournament in Los Angeles instead of south Florida, USACA Cricket Committee chairman Krish Prasad said one reason for the move was that USACA was looking to save money on travel costs for this tournament by having it in Los Angeles since two of the teams, North West and South West, are primarily based in California.

USACA will be using the tournament to help select a team for the 2011 ICC U-19 Americas Qualifier. According to Mohamed, that tournament will be hosted this year by USA in Florida from February 7-12. Matches will be held at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill and Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City. USA will be competing against defending champions Canada, as well as Bermuda, Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Argentina.

Should USA finish in the top two at the ICC U-19 Americas Qualifier like they did in 2009, they will advance to the U-19 World Cup Global Qualifier. Several Canada-based web sites have reported that the Global Qualifier is expected to take place in Ireland next July, but no official announcement has been made by the ICC. Teams at the Global Qualifier will be competing for spots in the 2012 ICC U-19 World Cup at a site yet to be determined.
  • Destroyers and Tigers get ready for Florida tournament

On December 3rd, 201, the Bedessee Destroyers will launch their campaign to reacquire the title of best 20/20 team in North America.

Pic (Right): News clip from the Radiant Info T20 in 2009.  Can the Destroyers live up to their reputation in Florida?

The Destroyers, underwritten by Bedessee Sporting Goods, is among the handful of fiercely competitive and privately financed teams in USA today.  The team was a semi-finalist at each edition of the Radiant Info T20, in addition to winning the title in 2009.  The team came up short in the finals of the Cricket Council USA tournament last year.

Comprised of national players from throughout the Caribbean and local players from around the United States of America, the team is among the favorites to take the $25,000 grand prize on offer at the 2010 Cricket Council USA tournament.   This year, teams are playing in four groups with five teams each, and a good number of teams are flying in from outside Florida including Washington Tigers, the defending champions.

In an attempt to reverse its fortunes, the New York Destroyers has secured the services of Caribbean stars Lennox Cush, Darren Ganga, Lendl Simmons, Navin Stewart, Dave Mohammed and William Perkins.  They will be joined by current USA all rounder Orlando Baker, ex-West Indies fast bowler Jermaine Lawson and ex-Guyana fast bowler Kevin Darlington.

For its part, Washington Tigers, captained by Dawood Ahmed has enlisted familiar names like Imran Awan, Gowkarran Roopnarine, Neil McGarrell and Usman Shuja.  “We have invested a lot in this team over the years and the benefits have started to flow, not only now but for a while now,’ Ahmed said in a press release.   The press release also noted that USA Captain Steve Massiah will be leading the United Chargers.

The most exciting development is the participation of Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, playing as part of the CFCA Royals.  This is a huge boost for the tournament organizers.    Not since Virender Sehwag played at the LA Open in 2007 has USA seen a major Indian cricketer play stateside.   In the aftermath of the ICL, and with the introduction of ICC Section 32 in June 2009, senior Indian players have generally avoided  playing in private tournaments.

Chubb Bedessee, owner and manager of Bedessee New York Destroyers, has taken his participation a little further this year by entering a second team - the Bedessee Florida Destroyers.  "We want to give more players an opportunity to showcase their skills and expanding to a second team was a way of recognizing those players who have shown promise, commitment and to give them an opportunity to match their skills against some of the best national and international players," Chubb Bedessee told DreamCricket.com.

The Bedessee Florida Destroyers include Jamaican national players Danza Hyatt, Krishmar Santokie and Shawn Findlay. Playing alongside them will also be Sherwin Ganga and Denesh Ramdin. With local Floridians such as Shawn Beckford and Kenroy Wright, this team will also be a major contender for the title of T20 supremacy.   The Destroyers have begun practice sessions under the watchful eyes of coach Mr. Linden Fraser at the DreamCricket indoor facility in Hillsborough, NJ.

Based on the level of competition experienced in the past, Coach Fraser feels that the Destroyers will be ready to fire on December 3.  Highly recognized sports trainer Mr. Basil Butcher Jr. is also helping the team prepare for upcoming tournament. Mr. Butcher is helping in enhancing the player’s fitness with exercise drills and workout sessions to make sure that all players are fit and ready. The full team squads are as follow:

Bedessee New York Destroyers: Barrington Bartley, Lennox Cush, Daren Ganga, Jermaine Lawson, William Perkins, Kavishwar Bridgepaul, Dave Mohammed, Orlando Baker, Kevin Darlington, Dennis Evans, Lendl Simmons, Navin Stewart, Dwayne Smith, George Adams, Andrew Gonsalves, Linden Fraser (Coach), Kerk Higgins ( Asst Coach), Chubb Bedessee (Manager), Lester Hooper (Asst Manager), Basil Butcher Jr. (Physio/Trainer), Curtis Clarke ( Public Relations Rep).

Bedessee Florida Destroyers: Nicholas Standford, Danza Hyatt, Shawn Findlay, Akeem Dodson, Twain Walters, Sherwin Ganga, Krishmar Santokie, Denesh Ramdin, Kenroy Wright, Shawn Beckford, Glenroy Anglin, Masood Mohammed, Keneil Irving, Donald Bennett, Damian Wellington, Nigel Liu (Coach), Tomlin Manna ( Manager).
