Absent hurt or absent ill
Absenteeism on the batting side counts as an out! ‘Absent ill’ is frequently a result of food poisoning when visiting the Indian sub-continent. ‘Absent hurt’ is a result of poor concentration at the nets or on the field. More recently, as for Pakistan, whose sentiments were hurt and their honor and integrity were at stake, absent hurt took on a whole new meaning when they did not show up as a protest against Darrell Hair.
Action
A description of which way the bowler bowl. As in round the wicket or over the wicket
Adelaide Oval
Conveniently situated next to a Cathedral, often badly needed, this is the home of South Australia’s West End Redbacks. In 1933, this ground with a capacity of 34,000 drew 50,000 spectators for the infamous Bodyline series. If that many Indian people were watching their team getting beaten in the skull, Jardine would have been lyched before the tea interval! In recent times, a crowd of 37,000 assembled not for a cricket match but for an Elton John concert.
Aggro
Aggravation! Aussies get aggro every time Warne gets disciplined for stuff that everyone wants to do! Sex, drugs....
Agricultural shot
Very inelegant shot. See hoick, tonk, or cow shot.
Alkie or Blind Mullet
Australian slang for someone piss-drunk.
All out
A misnomer because only 10 are out and the 11th is not out. In serious cricket, there is always one batsman still left standing. He is just stranded and having run out of playing partners, he accompanies the last fella that is out back to the pavilion. The last man gets to play on until he is out only in gully or street cricket. All Out is also a brand of insect repellant in India.
All run '4'
4 runs attained by running like a headless chicken! It is only possible when the boundary is too far or the fielder has a really weak arm. In some USA grounds, the ball can temporarily get lost in the rough even within the boundary giving the batsmen a chance to run 4! It is legal but tiresome.
All-rounder
Some think it is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that a lot of the popular cricketers are round all over - overweight and undertrained. Every cricketer thinks that he can bat and bowl well and therefore is a qualified all rounder. But even those that bat and bowl reasonably well, the true all-rounders, are still just good enough to be sent 5th or 6th down for batting.
Allow a single or double
An effective technique that usually is applied in one day matches when the required run rate has climbed to over 6 runs an over. So the batsman is kept amused by allowing him to take an occasional single run or two runs. By successfully preventing him from hitting boundaries, the pressure is kept up until the batsman takes stupid chances and pays the price.
