Short fine leg and short third man
Positions where fielders are unlikely to stop a ball unless going straight at them - unlike regular third man and fine leg positions - thereby conceding more runs than are saved by having mid-off and mid-on on boundary in the event of batsmen hitting the quick bowlers back over their heads.
Short leg
Fieldsman who fields ridiculously close to the batsmen in the hope he will get a catch. Sometimes has to be taken off the field on a stretcher.
Short mid off
A fielder who stands in front of cover point, cover, and mid-off within 10 yards of the batsman around 7 ‘o’ clock if you are facing the batsman. An attacking fielder with a view to look menacingly at the batsman.
Short mid on
A fielder who stands on the leg side, forward of the striker's wicket and very close to the batsman around 4 ‘o’ clock when you are facing the batsman. It is a static position designed to catch the ball from a misplaced block or defensive stroke.
Sight screen
A light colored screen placed behind the bowlers so that the batsman knows what he is hitting. Any motion across this screen is a source of great dissatisfaction and much grumbling by the batsman. He might even ask for the game to be stopped until the source of this disturbance (usually an errant policeman who has no idea how cricket works) moves across the sight screen.
