A solid all-round team effort by Bermuda was best exemplified by Kamau Leverock’s wonderful all-round performance today as Bermuda beat Canada by 72 runs at Erskine Cricket Ground in Brooklyn, N.Y., on day two of the ICC Americas Northern Division U-15 Tournament. Leverock was named Man of the Match after scoring 38 runs in 28 balls coming in at number four for Bermuda and then capped off his day with 3 for 30 in the bowling department on another hot August day in the Big Apple.
For the second day in a row, the team who won the toss, Canada today, elected to send the opposition in to bat. It looked to be a good decision early on as two wickets fell with only 42 on the board. But that’s when Leverock arrived. He put on a rapid aerial assault, blasting two 4s and three 6s off of Canada’s bowlers, as part of a 53 run stand for the third wicket with Shaquille Jones, the biggest partnership of the match.
The momentum swung back Canada’s way when Trevor Manoosingh’s triple strike rocked Bermuda. Coming on to bowl legspin in the 22nd over, Manoosingh took three wickets in his first nine balls, accounting for Leverock, Joshua Gilbert, and Shaquille Jones to make it 102 for 5. Jeevan Sidhu got Tre Manders out with his own legspin bowling in the 25th over to make it 102 for 6, but Bermuda captain Shea Pitcher resurrected the innings for his team with 39 runs at number seven, putting on 51 runs for the seventh wicket with Kamel Easton.
Vidura Ratnayake came on for his second spell of pace bowling, after opening the match, to get Easton for 9, making it 153 for 7, and proceeded to wipe out the Bermuda lower order to close the innings. He took four wickets in seven balls to finish with 5 for 19 as Bermuda scored 156 in 35.5 overs.
Nitesh Kumar, Canada’s captain who had just flown into New York City last night after making his first class debut in the Canada senior team’s Intercontinental Cup match versus Kenya in Toronto, started off the reply in scintillating form. Opening with Nikhil Dutta, the two eased their way to 46 in the 8th over and it looked like Canada would pass the target in a canter. Kumar had already hit 14 off Leverock in the over, including three consecutive 4s, when on the last ball he tried hooking a bouncer and got a top edge that was taken at short midwicket by Manders.
That turned out to be a massive breakthrough as Canada collapsed into a heap to be all out for 84 in 24.5 overs. Kumar’s 36 wound up being the top score for Canada and no one else crossed double figures. Bermuda fielded crisply and their bowlers delivered a tight line and length throughout. Gilbert and Kirt Brown bowled beautifully in tandem from the 11th to the 20th over. Gilbert strangled Canada with his offspin, giving away almost nothing from the Gateway Mall End to build pressure, while Brown blasted them out with his pace, which was aided by a strong wind at his back from the Belt Parkway End, to take 3 for 11.
After a double wicket maiden by Easton in the 22nd over made it 72 for 9, Leverock came back on from the Belt Parkway End to take the final wicket, a fitting way to end the match as he was Bermuda’s major aggressor on the day, both bowling and batting.
Bermuda is now 1-1 in the tournament and will have Wednesday off. Canada falls to 0-1 and will take on USA at 10:30 a.m. from the Erskine Cricket Ground in Brooklyn.
