Sewa International Media Release
This summer, Sewa International USA is planning to conduct a fundraising event - A hard tennis ball cricket tournament in Lincoln Park, Jersey City on 2nd & 3rd of June 2012. The main idea behind the tournament is for the participants (from NY & NJ) to have fun with friends, family or colleagues, while promoting awareness about Youth For Sewa (or YFS), an initiative of Sewa International, that focuses on youth involvement in social work.
Tournament Format
The games are open to both men and women and will be played between teams of 9 players each, using a hard tennis balls. Since each team will get 10 overs to bat, a game will not last more than 90 minutes. The venue of the final games (Lincoln Park) is very easily accessible via public transport and we can help arrange car pooling, if needed. Deadline for registrations is May 25th.
The Cause
All funds generated from this tournament will go towards ‘Vidyadaan’ - a program to help educate children from poor economic backgrounds.
2011 Success
Last year, the tournament had 300 players, 9 sponsors, about 30 volunteers and the games spread across 3 weekends. Overall $25,000 was raised which was in-turn used to educate 430 children during the academic year 2011-12. This year, the participation is expected to double and so are the funds raised. Youth For Sewa (www.sewausa.org/nyc) or YFS is a project of Sewa International USA which focuses on Youth involvement in social work. The specific cause, we chose for this fund-raising effort is “Vidyadaan” (In sanskrit, ‘Vidya’ means education and ‘Daan’ means donation)
About Vidyadaan: YFS volunteers in India (www.youthforseva.org) continuously collect information about students from under-previleged backgrounds, making sure to have persistent personal interaction with the students and their families with specific emphasis on the children’s education. Because of the close interaction, the volunteers have a pretty accurate estimate of the financial requirements for providing basic education to these students. YFS then goes ahead with various fund-raising efforts to fund the education of all such identified students. ‘School Kit Drive’, ‘Sponsor A Child’ or ‘Vidyadaan’ and weekend tutoring sessions are some of the YFS initiatives aimed at helping these students. Through Vidyadaan, a donor also gets the opportunity to act as a mentor to a child of his/her choice and YFS helps in making this process as transparent as possible.
