A solid batting platform for Canada was ruined by a heavy thunderstorm midway through the first innings against Bermuda that resulted in the match being called off with no result on Thursday at the 2012 ICC Americas U-18 Match Play Camp in Lauderhill, Florida. Both teams split five points for the no result while Canada also received three bonus points for targets passed within the first innings.

Canada won the toss and elected to bat first on a bright and sunny morning. Prushoth Wijayaraj and Farhan Malik came into the lineup for Canada in place of Amanpal Gillar and Shan Anantharajah from Wednesday’s win over USA while Bermuda brought in Zico Burgess for Onais Bascome and Christian Burgess for Demeiko James.

Bermuda got off to a fantastic start when they removed both Canadian openers before the end of the second over. Canada U-18 captain Sudeepta Aurka got out for 1 with one ball remaining in the first over when he drove a full toss from Zico Burgess straight to Delray Rawlins at point. Four balls later, Stephan Joseph was caught down the leg side for 1 by Christian Burgess off the bowling of Christian Gibbons to make the score 4 for 2.

Canada responded with a well-paced 108-run third wicket stand by Nikhil Dutta and Armaan Kapoor that gave them a bonus point for being only two wickets down after 15 overs and two more bonus points for a century partnership. It took Rawlins’ left-arm spin to break the partnership when Kapoor drove a full toss to Tre Manders on the long off boundary for 46 to make it 112 for 3 in the 26th.

Storm clouds had started to gather over the pitch at this point and three overs later the skies opened up to produce a torrential downpour as a thunderstorm swept through the Central Broward Regional Park. Both teams ran onto the field to drag covers onto the pitch to help compensate for the lack of a full-time grounds crew at the stadium.

The rain lasted from 12:10 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Officials called lunch as they waited for the field to dry. While much of the field had improved, the bowler’s run up at the north end of the ground still wasn’t good enough to ensure the safety of bowlers and wicketkeepers who would be utilizing that area. At 5:30 p.m. the umpires made a final inspection to determine if they could play 20 overs in the second innings to complete the match but the ground was not safe enough for play and the match was called off. Dutta had been not out on 43 in 88 balls for Canada with Gurkaran Dhillon fresh to the crease with 2 off 8 balls.

Bermuda returns to the stadium on Friday for their final match against USA while Canada has the day off. Live coverage of the match between USA U-18 and Bermuda U-18 will begin at 9:45 a.m. and is made possible in part by the New Inning Foundation.
