KCS Rao, a longtime member of the Los Angeles cricket community and one of the men credited with helping to secure the cricket fields at Woodley Park, died on Sunday. He is believed to have been 78 or 79 at the time of death. His age was listed as 77 in an article which appeared on ESPN.com in March of 2011.

Members of the Los Angeles cricket community gave personal tributes to Rao on social media. “Without him and others like him there would be no Woodley. Every player should honour him and his work for cricket,” wrote Arjunan Ethirveerasingam, former USACA South West Regional Director.

“Sad to hear about the passing for a True Gentleman and a Cricket Fanatic,” wrote USA player Abhimanyu Rajp. “This guy was an absolute legend. He will be sorely missed at Woodley. Cricket has lost a great servant,” wrote SCCA youth coordinator Richard Blackledge.

Rao was a fixture at Woodley for 40 years after moving to Los Angeles from Calcutta, India. Whether it was serving as an administrator, playing, spectator or blogger about cricket, Rao remained an active member of the cricket community in Los Angeles virtually until the day he died. One of his most recent contributions was a blog and newsletter titled “KC’s Weekend Cricket” which chronicled the goings on with the Southern California Cricket Association and USACA.

A memorial service for Rao will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 9 at The Venetian Palace in Reseda, California.
