The 2013 U19 Conference Championships featuring Eastern and Western Conference U19 sides tournament originally scheduled to be held Memorial Day weekend, has now been cancelled and an alternative approach has emerged.
The alternative approach was decided on to eliminate the possibility that the strength and depth of the two conference teams may not be comparable. The original plan was to select fourteen players from the eastern and western conference. Now, 24 players will be selected to participate in an inaugural USACA U-19 Combine, which will be held on May 31 to June 2, 2013 at the Lauderhill Stadium, FL., according to sources familiar with the process.
"The Combine is about ‘the best of the best’ selected from the Regions, testing themselves under the intense scrutiny of an elite selection regime. Whilst the final goal is to select our Under 19 team, all attendees will benefit from their involvement," Darren Beazley, USACA's CEO wrote in a USACA release.
Andy Pick who is ICC America’s High Performance Manager will oversee the USACA Combine with support from specialist staff, Regional coaches and USACA staff. Players will be tested for agility, strength and conditioning, skills and game knowledge over the first day. According to the USACA release, night time sessions will be devoted to assess players’ knowledge and understanding of game related tactics, nutrition and mental preparation and performance under pressure. Games of varying lengths will also be held in this intensive initiative, the release noted.
All USACA National Selectors will attend the USACA Combine and at the end of the three days, select a final team of fourteen (14) to represent their country at National Under 19’s that will compete ICC America’s Under 19 Division One tournament to be held in Toronto (Canada) from July 7th to 15th 2013. They will also select four reserves. Those selected to attend the USACA Combine will be notified during the first week of May.
Regional trials were completed in four regions, Hemant Buch noted in an email that was circulated widely.
