Conrad Hunte Cricket & Social Club, Atlanta, (CHCSC) has pulled off what can easily be described as one of, if not, the most astounding performances in the GSCL’s short seven year history – defeating both league heavyweights, Tropical Sports Club and Vibes Sports Club, and this just half way into the 2013 championship season. Though Trophies and titles are not handed out in June, nor are champions crowned before October, the message has been sent, and the thud has echoed far and wide across the region.

Undefeated CHCSC sits atop the points table with 3- 0 - 2 record, and with MCC 0-2-2, Lake United 0-2-2, and Nashville Cricket Ass. 0-2-1, remaining on their schedule, a play-off position and likely rematch with one of the ‘Giants’ seems imminent.

The “little David” who has inflicted the big, heavy, blows on the league’s goliaths is newcomer Alexander Amsterdam, with a crucial 31 vs. Tropical, and a huge 217 vs. Vibes. His knock against Vibes included the rarest of rare – 36 (six 6s) from one over, and he almost single handedly took on the likes of USA’s Barrington Bartley and Timroy Allen, and former West Indies and Jamaica national Leon Garrick.

Victories in two contrasting games have vaulted CHCSC to the top. Batting first against Vibes the pair of Amsterdam and Smith (81 n.o) racked up almost 300 of the 358 runs, and then had to survive an Allen’s onslaught as Vibes replied with 288. Over 600 runs were scored off 73 overs.

A very different and low scoring game took place last Sunday at Burdett park against Tropical. Under over cast skies, and on a wet and heavy outfield, Tropical took first strike and never did get going in the slow conditions and against a good, steady bowling attack. Martin struck first and early to remove Hoilette and Mumby, and Powell followed soon after, scooped up at leg slip off Edmondson. Hutson then removed R.Hoilett and B. Williams with two outstanding away swingers that were edged to the keeper. It was then left to K. Lake, with figures of 7-1-31-4 to wrap up the innings. In this display of Tropical’s most dismal batting performance, only D. Morgan (pictured right) stood tall – carrying his bat for 73. No other bastman scored in double figures, and Tropical was routed for 111 off 32 overs!

By mid afternoon the sky had cleared, and the conditions improved slightly. The chase though was no cakewalk for CHCSC. Wong swung the ball a lot, but without success. Recently selected US U19 player K. Edmondson survived a very testy spell, and blocked his way to a patient 19 off 30 overs. It was left to Amsterdam to bolster the run rate with two sixes and a couple of fours. He survived an easy chance off a drop by Williams, but fell next over on a leading edge pop-up to mid-on. By then the target was within sight, and CHCSC got home by five wickets.

In other games over the week-end:

At Mark Trail: Kayon Watson blasted 105 with seven 6s and five 4s to lead UBACC (274 for 8) over Caribbean Sports Club (158 all out – Robinson 45). For UBACC, Stanio took 4 for 37, while Atkins finished with 3 for 33.
At Best Academy: It took a half-century sixth wicket partnership from McFarlene and Francois for the struggling Vibes to edge MCC Somerset by four wickets to register their first win. Scores: MCC Somerset 120 all out; Tulloch 39; Dyer 3 for 16. Vibes 128 for 6; McFarlene 27 n.o; Matheswari 3 for 41
At Lithonia Park: No scores available.
All eyes will now turn to Lithonia Park where on next Sunday Vibes will host Tropical in this continuing saga of “big time cricket” in the GSCL. CHCSC meanwhile will host archrival MCC at Burdett Park.
