Youth For Sewa (YFS) volunteers from Sewa International’s NY Metro chapter raised $30,000 at the YFS Cricket For Charity tournament held in Lincoln Park, Jersey City on July 13 and 14, 2013.

The new Mayor of Jersey City, Steve Fulop, hitting the cricket ball at the YFS Cricket For Charity tournament.

Team Akhadi won the tournament after chasing down the target of 62 runs set by Team Hit Men.  Their skipper Nirav Mistry, who later won the Most Valuable Player award, led Akhadi from the front.  Mistry announced a donation of $220 after the win and said: “We are very thankful to Sewa for giving us this experience and we look forward to volunteering with them during future events. We dedicate this victory to the beneficiaries of the Vidyadaan project.”

The event raised over $30,000 allowing Sewa to keep up with the target of educating 400 children every year. The organizers were easily able to reach their registration goal of 32 teams thanks to the event's popularity and increased outreach about Sewa’s good work in the local community.  More than 400 players and volunteers took part in the event.  Sewa is a Sanskrit word that stands for “Service Above Self".

Speaking at the award ceremony on July 14th, Ravi Chakinala, President of NY Metro Chapter of Sewa International detailed service activities and disaster relief efforts taken up by Sewa volunteers in 17 countries across the globe and 38 chapters across the US.

The award ceremony was attended by several delegates from Jersey City administration. Speaking at the ceremony, Ward B Coucilman Khemraj Ramchal (fondly known as Chico) said, “Congratulations to the winners and the entire Sewa team for conducting such a successful cricket tournament! Going forward, the city council shall collaborate with Sewa volunteers for the city’s social service and community development programs.”

Distributing trophy and medals to the winning team, Steven Fulop, Jersey City’s new Mayor, said “Jersey City is more diverse than ever before. There was never an advocate for Cricket on the city council and we now have Chico (Mr. Ramchal).” Handing over a proclamation to Ravi on behalf of the City Council and the Mayor’s office, he said, “I’m excited to work with Sewa both on the Athletic front and the volunteer front. We are lucky to have Sewa be role models for the Youth of Jersey City. It’s a privilege to work with Sewa and finally, congratulations to the Winning team”.

Other attendees from the administration included Rolando Lavarro (Council President),  Joyce Waterman (Councilman at Large),  Candice Osborne (Ward E Councilman) and Ryan Strother (Director of Recreation).
