DreamCricket.com is wrapping up the year in United States Cricket by recognizing USA’s standout performers at the international level. The 2013 New Inning Foundation Newcomer of the Year is Ravi Timbawala.
The award recognizes USA’s most outstanding player making their senior level international debut during the calendar year. The 24-year-old batsman follows in the footsteps of previous recipients of the award including fellow southern California resident Abhimanyu Rajp, women’s player Shebani Bhaskar and off-spinner Muhammad Ghous.
Like last year’s winner Rajp, Timbawala first made a name for himself playing for the USA U-19 team that was the first USA squad to ever qualify for an ICC World Cup event, going to the ICC U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006.
The precocious talent began playing for the USA U-19 team in 2003, opening the batting for USA against Cayman Islands in his debut match for the squad as a 14-year-old at the ICC Americas U-19 Championship in Canada.
Timbawala was in striking distance of earning a call-up with the senior national team in 2010 after some solid performances, including a 92 against a 2009 USACA National Tournament runner-up Central East team that included USA fast bowler Usman Shuja. He was shortlisted for a selection camp at the end of 2009 prior to the USA team picked to tour the UAE and Nepal for the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier and World Cricket League Division Five, but just missed the cut.
Timbawala remained on the fringes in the last few years, but finally got his chance this past summer when he was announced as part of USA’s squad to tour Canada for the Auty Cup.
In the two-day match between the sides, Timbawala showed flashes of what has made him such a tantalizing prospect for so long as he top-scored for USA with 44. He was USA’s leading scorer overall in the four-match tour and given the opportunity to contribute is bound to be an impact player for USA in the years to come.
Timbawala has consistently been among the leading scorers in the Southern California Cricket Association, arguably the most competitive league in the USA. He topped the SCCA Division One runs chart in both 2010 and 2011 playing for Vijayta CC.
Away from cricket, Timbawala is completing pharmacy school at the University of Southern California. Time will tell if his bat holds a prescription to cure USA’s chronic batting ailments.
New Inning Foundation and DreamCricket.com congratulate Timbawala on his achievement. In recognition of his achievement, Timbawala will receive a plaque as well as a $200 DreamCricket.com Pavilion Shop gift certificate sponsored by New Inning Foundation.
