Gulu Ezekiel Blog: We have Seen it All!
by Gulu Ezekiel
Aug 21, 2006
Cricket is going through perhaps its world period of turmoil in history. First the Colombo tri-series jinx, now Pakistan in hot water again.
Never before in international cricket has a team forfeited a match after refusing to play in protest against an umpire's decision.
Australia's Darrel Hair appears to revel being in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. He is the most unpopular umpire in the sub-continent, perhaps for good reason.

Then again, no country can go around demanding which umpire should be allowed to stand in their matches. Nor can they decide when and if they wish to play and not to play in a match. This would result in anarchy and bring cricket to a standstill.

So were the umpires justified in pulling up the Pakistani who have had a history of players fined for various infringements? And were the Pakistanis justified in staging the kind of protest that brought the Oval Test to a grinding halt and ultimately resulted in forfeiture? For that matter, would they have done the same if the series was on the wire rather than already in England's pocket?
