Tendulkar to write for Kraken
by Gulu Ezekiel
Sep 01, 2006
Dozens of books have been written on him in various languages. Now finally, after 17 years of representing the country, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is ready to tell his own story, in his own words.

But it won’t be any ordinary book. It could be priced so high that few in India—certainly not the loyal mass of his middle-class fans—could ever dream of buying a copy.

To be released at the end of the year, the book is called Tendulkar’s Opus and is being published by the Kraken Group of the UK. It is part of a series of mega-pricey, mega-glossy books which the Chief Executive and founder, Karl Fowler insists are not books alone, —hence the tag of ‘opus’ for all of them.

The first in the series released this year focuses on America'’s sporting passion, the annual Super Bowl, the final of the American football (Gridiron) season which is the most watched event every year on US television ever since it was first played in 1967.

Just to give you an idea of the size of the project— the price of this particular book/opus (weighing in at a whopping 88 pounds) ranges from a ‘mere’ $4,000 to the ‘MVP’ (Most Valuable Player— - signed by each of the surviving awardees down the years) edition priced at a breathtaking $40,000!

Inside are 400,000 words and 2,000 photos contributed by the cream of the American sporting press.

Joining Tendulkar in the Kraken ‘Opus’ stable this year is Argentine football legend Diego Maradona.

It is not known who the contributors to the Tendulkar opus will be. But excerpts of Tendulkar'’s own words of his remarkable life-story have already begun to appear in the British media.

The Kraken Group was launched by the 36-year-old English financial wizard Fowler, formerly of the Goldman Sachs blue-chip investment firm.

Kraken set up a hedge fund in Guernsey in the UK that specializes in giving tax and investment advise to the rich and powerful, including former English football coach Sven-Goran Erikkson.

According to Fowler, both Tendulkar and Maradona approached his company for investment advice and also signed book deals with the Opus publishing branch of Kraken.

The first book with an English sporting theme will be on Manchester United. Prices for these editions, signed by Man United superstars such as Bobby Charlton, Roy Keane and Eric Cantona range from 3,000 to 4,000 Pounds Sterling.

Future projects include Formula-1, Arsenal, Barcelona FC, the Ashes, the Ryder Cup and non-sporting topics such as The Rolling Stones, Disney and NASA.
