The DLF tri-series beginning in Kuala Lumpur on
Tuesday is shaping up as a vital tune-up for the three
teams, India, the West Indies and Australia ahead of
the Champions Trophy in India next month.
All three teams are short of match practice, though
the West Indians have been recently involved in their
first domestic 20/20 tournament.
With last month's ODI series in Sri Lanka being washed
out, India will be desperate to get their players into
some sort of form, in particular Sachin Tendulkar who
is returning to international cricket after his latest
shoulder injury that forced him to miss the tour to
the West Indies.
World champions Australia have gone in with a squad of
18 and there will be a lot of interest in new find,
left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Johnson.
Also under the spotlight will be Glenn McGrath who
will be seen in action for the first time this year.
The contest between him and McGrath will be worth
going miles to see. There are indications that Simon
Katich will open the batting with Adam Gilchrist.
The West Indians have been beset with problems off the
field since beating India 4-1 in the ODI series at
home earlier this year. No wonder captain Brian Lara
has urged his players to focus on the tournament.
The big question mark will be over the pitch
conditions since the only previous occasion KL had
hosted international cricket was back in 1998 during
the Commonwealth Games.
