Not even at full strength, Australia easily beat West
Indies in the final of the DLF Cup ODI tri-series at
Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, winning by 127 runs.
Even without Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist, Australia
lost only one match with one washed out.
The Aussies used this tournament as an opportunity to
tinker and experiment before next month's Champions
Trophy in India.
A real talent emerged in left-arm pace bowler Mitchell
Johnson who destroyed India but then went home as part
of the rotation policy.
Glenn McGrath looked rusty after 9 months out of
international cricket. But Brett Lee was a revelation
and was player of the tournament. Michael Hussey and
wicket-keeper Brad Haddin were also outstanding.
West Indies were the surprise finalists while for
India it was a big disappointment with only one win
and coach Greg Chappell now facing a lot of flak for
his experiments that did not come off.
The fate of Irfan Pathan is causing the most worry.
While his batting has improved under Chappell, his
bowling has lost its sting and this has cost him his
place in the side.
The idea of using Rahul Dravid as an opener also
backfired and the experiment was reversed in the
crunch game against Australia on Friday with Virender
Sehwag once again going in with Sachin Tendulkar whose
return to form was one of the few pieces of good news
for the Indian team.
