Day 4 - Match Report
Oct 11, 2008
The semi-finals of the inaugural NuWare New Jersey Twenty20 tournament will begin on October 12th at Weston Road Cricket Ground at 10AM with a keen contest between Global Challengers and North Jersey Renegades. The second semi-final between Philadelphia Terminators and New York Knights will be played at 2PM at the same venue.
Argonauts vs Challengers
In Group B, North Jersey Renegades and Philadelphia Terminators qualified for the semis based on their preliminary round standings last weekend.
Group A had become the proverbial "Group of Death" with 5 teams still in contention for the semi-final slots as of this morning.
New York Knights, who were on top of the leader board with 6 points before today needed a win in their only match today. That they did without expending too much effort. Playing against Edison Daredevils, the Knights excelled in the bowling department and had the Daredevils reeling for 50 for 5 after 10 overs. For Daredevils, the tail saved the blushes and ended their innings on 97. New York Knights achieved their target in 16.3 overs for the loss of just 1 wicket. The loss to New York Knights ended the aspirations of the talented Edison team.
When Global Challengers won against NJ Royals in the morning, that put paid to Royals hopes of getting through. Edison Daredevils had lost to Argonauts, which meant that the afternoon encounter between Global Challengers and Argonauts would effectively be the quarter-final for Group A.
The Global versus Argonauts match swung one way and then the other throughout the afternoon. There were some tense moments towards the end as the Argonauts started to run out of breath even as the target was within sight.

After Global Challengers were put in to bat, they set the Argonauts a target of 139 to win. On paper, that was not a huge ask for the powerful batting lineup of Argonauts. But the pressure was increasing and the side started to wilt. The tide turned for Global after Argonauts gifted a wicket when two batsmen ended on the same side. In the end, Argonauts fell short by just 7 runs, a situation they had found themselves in against the Royals.
With that 7 run win, Global Challengers took the second spot in their group and won their passage to the semi-finals. They will play against North Jersey Renegades in the first semi-final on Sunday, October 12th.

In other matches today, NJ Royals defeated Holmdel Hurricanes by 3 wickets. Somerset Cavaliers lost both their matches today to Jersey Indians and Philadelphia Terminators.
At Colonial Park, the Mercer Warriors lost to Connecticut Patriots in the other morning match. Connecticut scored 150 for 7 in just 15 overs and Mercer lost wickets at regular intervals ending their innings for 109.
