The SCTCA snatched victory from the jaws of disaster with a surprising 18 run win over the CCL in today's 40-over ACL tournament match. Mass withdrawals from the selected squad at the last minute sent the selectors scrambling for replacements late into Friday evening through Saturday morning. Some of these pullouts appeared to be unavoidable, but most were apparently motivated by reasons that ought to be seriously investigated by the league. The SCTCA was saved the embarrassment of forfeiting the game only by the huge recruitment efforts of a few individuals, and the willingness of several players to play on very short notice. We actually ended up with 13 players at Newfield, only 4 of whom were in the original squad.
Sincere thanks and apologies to the 2 volunteers who responded to our late request, but had to sit out anyway.
The SCTCA batted first and scored 198. Herno Smith opened the innings and carried his bat for 89, with good support from Diego Hansen (16) and Virender (30). The CCL came close with 180, thanks mainly to a hard-hitting 47 from Shezad, and 42 by Stephan. The SCTCA bowlers were outstanding: Afzaal took 4, Brian Salmon and Everton McHargh bowled beautifully and got 2 wickets apiece, and Neil Harrison and Herno Smith each picked up 1 wicket. It was a tremendous effort under the circumstances, and we owe this group much respect and appreciation.
Thanks, also, to the BCC and Mr. Lester Foster for making their field and playing equipment available.
