A 15 man USA squad, including 5 potential debutants, has been chosen for the ICC America’s Sub Regional T20 qualifier to take place next month in Raleigh, NC. The new faces are Usman Ashraf - a legspinning allrounder from the Millenium Cricket league in New Jersey; Jan Nisar-Khan – a medium paced bowling allrounder from the Houston Cricket League and an ex-first class cricketer from Pakistan; Monank Patel, a wicketkeeper and top-order batsman from the New Jersey Cricket League; David Wakefield, a top order batsman and legbreak bowler, and ex-first class cricketer from New Zealand; and Sai Srinivas Salver who is traveling reserve, a middle order batsman from the Southern California Cricket Association.

The selectors have also indicated that another 4 new caps could be blooded in the side in the coming months, with the team to compete in the WICB Super50 in October, and also the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in November. A number of players that were automatic choices in any USA team in the recent past have been left out this time, highlighting the depth and competition for places that now exists around the country.

The fast bowling unit basically picked itself given the performance of both Elmore Hutchinson and Saurabh Netravalkar in USAs most recent campaigns, and the re-emergence of Ali Khan in recent months. With the likes of Jessy Singh and Kyle Phillip waiting in the wings, our fast bowling stocks suddenly look solid.

The make-up of the spin-bowling options is interesting, with three leg-break bowlers in Timil Patel, Ashraf and Wakefield, to go along with Nosthush Kenjige’s Left-Arm-Orthodox, meaning that we have 4 front line spinners who turn the ball away from right handed batsmen. Only Steven Taylor with his offspin offers variation in that regard.

The make-up of the batting order will also be interesting, with Monank Patel, Steven Taylor, Jaskaran Malhotra, Wakefield and Sunny Sohal all potential openers. Presumably at least two of these players will need to slot into the middle order alongside captain Ibrahim Khaleel.

The battle for the medium pace allrounder spot will be interesting with encumbant Roy Silva presumably going head-to-head with Jan Nisar-Khan for one spot.

The Sub Regional Qualifier sees the USA line up against Canada, Panama, and Belize, with two teams going through to the next stage of qualifying. It would be a massive shock if anyone other than Canada and the U.S. went through, so it is a good opportunity to try a few new faces.

The full schedule for the tournament is…

September 19 – USA v Panama (11am)
September 20 – USA v Belize (3pm)
September 22 – USA v Canada (3pm)
September 23 – USA v Panama (3pm)
September 25 – USA v Canada (3pm)
September 26 – USA v Belize (11am)
