USA U19 cricket vice-captain Utkarsh Srivastava and legspinner Aryan Satheesh combined for seven wickets to help wipe out Bermuda U19 for 115 before a third half-century of the tournament from Prannav Chettipalayam pushed USA past the target in a seven-wicket win on Tuesday afternoon on day three of the 2023 ICC Americas U19 World Cup Qualifier at Toronto Cricket Skating & Curling Club. Srivastava was named Player of the Match after taking 4 for 13 in 8.5 overs of offspin while Satheesh contributed 3 for 42 at the opposite end as Bermuda was bowled out in 41.5 overs in a match that ended before the official lunch break thanks to USA’s speedy overhaul of the target, taking just 11.1 overs to get the runs required.

USA won the toss and chose to send Bermuda in to bat first on a day where rain was forecast. Though a steady drizzle arrived midway through the Bermuda innings, it was never thick enough to force the umpires to take the players off the field. Instead, Bermuda had far more problems dealing with USA’s bowlers than the weather.

New ball pace bowler Ateendra Subramaniam got USA off to a solid start in the field by dismissing both Bermuda openers. Omari DeShields was the first to go for 3, flashing outside off and edging the last ball of the second over behind to Arjun Ramesh, who was keeping wicket in place of Amogh Arepally for the first time in the tournament with Arepally rotated out of the USA XI for the day. Subramaniam struck again on the final ball of the fourth over with the prized wicket of Jermal Proctor, who chased a wider delivery to edge behind for 10 making it 14 for 2 after four.

Satheesh replaced Subramaniam in the attack for the start of the 12th over and struck twice in his first four balls balls. Parth Patel took a brilliant catch at slip off a fended edge to remove Keegan Jones for 9 before Bermuda U19 captain Zakao Hart misread a googly and was bowled leaving the ball alone for a second-ball duck to make it 35 for 4.

Zeri Tomlinson and Luke Horan teamed for a 35-run partnership for the fifth wicket to prop up the Bermuda innings. But Patel’s offspin broke the stand in the 25th over when he bowled Tomlinson for 27 after an attempted sweep was dragged onto his stumps.

Bermuda put up little resistance afterwards when Srivastava’s offspin was introduced. Isaiah O’Brien was given lbw for a fifth-ball duck before Sa’Qui Robinson was bowled for 3 on a failed drive. Dionte Dowling became Srivistava’s second lbw victim for 4 when he shuffled too far across his stumps and missed a flick across the line. Satheesh took his third when he induced a low return catch from Horan for 30 to make it 98 for 9. Luke Fulton put up brief resistance scoring 16 after entering at No. 10 before Srivastava enticed a lofted drive that was brilliantly caught diving forward at long-off by Satheesh to end the innings.

Aside from Srivastava and Satheesh’s figures, Subramaniam ended with 2 for 11 in five overs while Patel claimed a tidy 1 for 10 in seven overs.

Chettipalayam and Bhavya Mehta put their foot on the accelerator as soon as they got to the crease to begin the USA chase, putting on 71 in 6.4 overs for the first wicket. The stand ended when Mehta heaved across the line to a slower ball from Horan and was bowled for 26. USA U19 captain Rishi Ramesh smashed 11 off 7 balls before he fell in the 9th, pulling a full toss from Horan straight to DeShields at square leg who made a sharp diving catch to his right to make it 93 for 2. Chettipalayam brought up his half-century off 30 balls before he fell four balls later for 60, bowled driving at a full delivery from Dowling to make it 103 for 3.

Srivastava and Mahesh knocked off the remaining runs to get USA across the line with 38.5 overs to spare. Horan finished with 2 for 16 in his three overs. Dowling claimed 1 for 27 in two.

In the day’s other match, Canada bowled out Argentina for 37 in 10.2 overs as Mosam Parekh claimed 7 for 24. Canada chased the target in just 3.3 overs.

All teams have a day off on Wednesday before USA resumes play on Thursday against Argentina at King City.
