James Coldham wrote of Martin Bladen Hawke, or simply Lord Hawke: “That English cricket not only survives in its traditional form, but thrives, is in no small measure the enduring achievement of three eminent Victorians:  W.G. Grace, Lord Harris, and Lord Hawke.”

In his words, W.G. Grace was the ultimate exponent of the game, Lord Harris its foremost administrator, and Lord Hawke was the game’s greatest exporter. [Some 100 years before the likes of Packer, Dalmiya and Modi.]

After succeeding his father as the 7th Baron Hawke in 1887, Lord Hawke appears to have been bitten by the traveling cricket bug.  In organizing the many tours abroad, Lord Hawke “elevated the status of the game and became the greatest ambassador for the sport.”

Lord Hawke's resume included captaincy of Yorkshire CCC for 28 seasons and captaincy of England for 4 tests (all victorious).  Lord Hawke was an England national selector for 10 years, Wisden cricketer of the year in 1909, President as well as Trustee of Marylebone CC for over a decade.

Here is the impressive list of tours by Lord Hawke’s XI during 1890s - North America (1891), Ceylon/India (1892-93), North America again (1894), South Africa (1895-96), West Indies (1897), and South Africa yet again (1898/1899).  North America, more prominently USA, was the only place he toured twice during that decade!

1891: Lord Hawke's Tour of USA - GOP tastes victory in the first match

In 1891, Lord Hawke’s XI played games against the Gentlemen of Philadelphia, against All New York, Baltimore, Boston Athletic Association and Chicago. 

The Englishmen were delighted by the American hospitality and huge throngs followed the English cricketers wherever they went.

But The NY Times reporter was unimpressed by the crowds - "Weather being chilly, only about 5,000 people were in attendance," he wrote about the turnout at Manheim, Pennsylvania.    Special trains were run from Chestnut Hill, Bryn Mawr and Philadelphia when the new Germantown Cricket Club clubhouse was opened after the second match.  Over 1,000 people attended the invitation-only ball. 
 
The Philadelphians won the first match that began on September 25th, 1891 in a convincing manner.  As in the previous year's USA vs Canada match, it was HI Brown who was the spearhead of the Gentlemen of Philadelphia.   He accounted for 10 wickets in this match.

When Lord Hawke's XI won the toss and batted their way to 259, things looked a tad uphill for the Americans.   Despite the decent showing by HI Brown.  But GS Patterson scored 68 in the Philadelphians first innings and the English lead in the first innings was just 11 runs.  HI Brown took a career best 6 wickets for 55 decimating England's best batsmen with his vicious spell. 

The English were pummeled into submission and collapsed for 171 while Philadelphians reached their target for the loss of just two wickets! 

In the second match that was played on October 1 and 2, 1891 at the Germantown Cricket Club in Manheim, England's best bowler of the time, Woods, appeared to have found his rhythm and single-handedly knocked the Philadelphians down for 56 in the first innings.   Woods took 12 wickets of the 14 wickets that fell.   Although Philadelphia's bowlers tried to salvage some pride as they bowled England out for 82, the batting collapsed once again in the second innings scoring just 119.   England were made to sweat but not too much as they reached 95 for the loss of 6 wickets. 

The visitors had seen the best of their opposition and what followed on the tour was nowhere near as competitive.  Playing in Baltimore on October 9th and 10th, Lord Hawke's XI defeated Baltimore by an innings and 150 runs.  In Boston, they won by 242 runs. 

1894 Lord Hawke's XI Tour of USA:  A near clean sweep for visitors

Lord Hawke returned in 1894 having toured Ceylon and India the previous year.  Lord Hawke’s team included three players from the 1891 tour and the remaining were first-timers.  For the Englishmen, this was a much shorter tour with just four matches in USA.

A beautiful wicket awaited the game at Livingston, home of the Staten Island Cricket Club, on September 17, 1894.  The New York team practiced for two weeks and a great deal of time was spent on the selection of the team.   Financially, the first match was a successful one.   All tickets were sold in advance and a large number witnessed the game.  The Staten Island Cricket Club erected a large tent to take care of refreshments.  W Fenwick, Secretary of the Staten Island Cricket Club toiled hard with the arrangements.

After Lord Hawke’s XI put forth a great first innings total of 289 with AJL Hill scoring 99 an LCV Bathurst making 53, no play was possible on the second day and the match was washed out.   Cobb got 4 wickets in his 43 over spell.

"FG Payne the captain, acquired a reputation as a good bat and a very good wicket-keeper.   He is the Captain of the NJ Athletic Club, the leading cricket team in the Metropolitan League.  He made his first appearance with the champion Berkeley team in 1892, achieving considerable success in the first season.

AE Patterson, the Vice Captain, is in his second season with the Staten Island Cricket Club.   In his first year, he scored 342 runs for his club, the highest in the team and third in the league.  

Outside of Philadelphia, there is no better cricketer than MR Cobb.   An all-rounder who consistently finished at the top of the batting averages four seasons in a row and also finished at the top of the bowling averages for three out of the four seasons.

HC Wright returned to New Jersey from the Windy City where he was Chicago's leading run getter for three years.   FF Kelly too is from Chicago and is playing his first year in the New York area.   He was for many years Chicago's best bowler.  He also bats well and his average for Chicago Cricket Association is 23.42. 

Tyers, the professional of the NJ Athletic Club is one of the best batsmen in the country.   In 1893, he averaged 60.8 runs and before this match in 1894, he scored a lot of runs including two centuries. 

FT Short came from Clapton Cricket Club in England and Montreal Cricket Club.  He excelled at both places.   In 1894, he was the captain of the Staten Island Cricket Club.  A good batsman, he is capable of breaking up any bowling with his stubborn style.

JH Lambkin played for Staten Island.  Before that he was on the Stonyhurst College Eleven in England. 

Wright the professional bowler of the Staten Island got 5 for 70 against the Australians two years before.   

Brooklyn is represented by Archie Brown who scored a lot of runs against Lord Hawke's XI on his last trip.   He scored 23 not out in the first innings and 72 not out in the second in that series.  

Arthur Smedley, Manhattan's main all-rounder, has seen better days."

The second match against Gentlemen of Philadelphia at Merion was a 3-day affair played on 21st, 22nd and 24th of September.  Lord Hawke himself led from the front here scoring 78 and restoring balance to a team that was sent reeling by JB King’s opening spell.  They were on 14 for 3 when the tide turned.   Bailey took 7 wickets in this match to wipe the rest of the Englishmen and they posted a first innings total of 187.   When it was their turn to bat, GOP did well to reach 169 with Bohlen scoring 79 and AM Wood getting 41.

In their second innings, Lord Hawke’s side were 179 for 8 at end of Day 2 but the tail played doggedly the following morning until the second innings total reached 235.   With the lead at 253 and the entire day ahead of them, GOP had to be patient at the crease.  But Bathurst of England had other plans.  He chose the day to best his bowling record by taking 8 for 44 in 27 overs (5-ball overs) giving his side a victory by a 131 run margin.

The third match began on September 28, 1894 and it was do or die for the GOP  having lost the first match.   New York Times noted that “a very low attendance of 4,000” witnessed the opening day of the great match at Manheim between Lord Hawke's visiting English side and Gentlemen of Philadelphia.

The dismal attendance, the paper noted, was low mainly due to dull and cheerless weather and a strong gale was in evidence all day.  The players shivered in their flannels and the spectators sat in their overcoats.   [Wish we had 4,000 people at any cricket match these days!]
 
The Englishmen could not be bothered to field in this kind of weather.  Choosing to bat, they made a slow 211 after batting all day - 46 came from the blade of RS Lucas.  The home side displayed some very lethargic fielding, once again due to the weather, with the exception of JS Robinson, a member of Lord Hawke's team fielding for Philadelphia as a substitute for Paterson.  King, Patterson and Clark Jr, took 3 wickets apiece with the last of them taking 3 wickets from just 20 balls.  

On Day 2, Gentlemen of Philadelphia were wiped out for 107 and 64, losing by an innings and 40 runs.  Whitwell accounted for 9 wickets and the rest were off the bowling of Bathurst and Hillyard.  On the whole, it was a dismal ending for Philadelphia. 

Following this match, a match was played in Toronto against Canada (drawn) on October 3rd and 4th and another between Massachusetts and Lord Hawke's XI in Lowell on 6th Oct 1894 the result of which has not been preserved.
