In a move that had been anticipated for several weeks, USA Cricket formally announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to terms with former Australia international Stuart Law to be the USA men’s national team head coach. Law is expected to formally take charge of the team ahead of the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in May and will continue through the end of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. However, it is unknown how long Law’s contract terms extend beyond that.
Law, 55, had first appeared at the 2024 USA Cricket Men’s T20 National Championship at Prairie View, Texas in what USA Cricket tournament officials said was purely in a observational capacity. It is understood that Law was unable to formally sign a contract until his work visa authorization was approved. As such, he was in USA’s dugout throughout the recently completed T20I series against Canada, though in what was only described by USA Cricket as an unofficial “consultant” role.
Prior to coming on board as USA head coach, Law was most recently head coach for the Bangladesh U19 team during the 2024 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup in South Africa. During his coaching career, Law has also had roles in charge of Afghanistan, West Indies, Bangladesh and Middlesex, and also served as an assistant coach for Sri Lanka.
It is an exciting opportunity to join USA Cricket at this time,” Law said in a USA Cricket press release. “USA is one of the strongest Associate nations in the sport, and I believe that we can mould a formidable squad going ahead. The first task will be to prepare the team for the series against Bangladesh and then set our sights on our home World Cup, which will be huge.”
The USA men’s head coaching role had been officially vacant since the departure of J Arunkumar in December 2022. Former USA player Kevin Darlington had served as interim head coach for multiple tours since then and remained part of the USA backroom staff as bowling/assistant coach during the recently completed T20I series against Canada.
