The scheduled third T20I match of the five-match series between USA and Canada was called off on Wednesday afternoon at Prairie View Cricket Complex due to a wet outfield. The venue, which had already experienced drainage difficulties in March when the final two days of the USA Cricket T20 National Championship were abandoned in identical circumstances, ran into problems yet again on Wednesday due to insufficient drainage infrastructure at the ground.
Heavy thunderstorms washed through the Houston area from 10 pm until 7 am from Tuesday overnight into Wednesday. Despite the scheduled start time of 3 pm, meaning the facility had more than eight hours to dry out in temperatures climbing from 65 to 70F degrees, the match was initially under a delay. However, a 3:30 pm inspection of the outfield by ICC match officials resulted in them taking the decision to call off the entire match with no chance of the outfield drying out to allow play to begin safely before the cutoff time for a five-over contest.
Officials also decided against pushing the third match back to Thursday because it would mean having three match days in a row without a rest day to end the series. Instead, the originally scheduled fourth T20I is set for Friday at 10 am. Clear weather is forecast throughout the remainder of the week in the greater Houston area.
